COURSE DESCRIPTION

Learners will develop an industry-recognised level of knowledge to confidently pursue a variety of roles within the finance sector.

They will learn how to apply the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired using professional level infrastructure while developing communication skills, professional conduct skills, time management skills, and the ability to independently research for added employability.

Within each mandatory Level 3 unit, students will complete set tasks based on current economic activity and demonstrate their understanding of actions in an activity diary.

In modules where practical application of trading knowledge is being assessed, learners must also maintain a portfolio of trading activity.

The Level 3 diploma provides employers and professional associations with greater confidence in graduates, while preparing them to progress onto the Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Financial Trading.

This qualification uniquely holds both Higher Education RQF credits, and UCAS points equivalent to an increase of two grades in the UK ‘A Level’ categorisation system supporting Higher Education Institution entry. Within the European Qualification Framework, this is also recognised at Level 4.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be 16 years and over. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, although it is recommended that learners have:

• an interest in the financial services sector and
• hold a Maths GCSE at Grade A-C (or equivalent) or higher.

Initial assessments will be conducted to ensure applicants can produce evidence to the required educational standard.

What modules are included in the qualification?

Level 3 Diploma in Financial Trading

Modules:

1. Financial market forces and their effects on the financial markets

Students will develop core knowledge and skills to understand and analyse how financial market forces influence the markets as a whole. They will also learn how to summarise and demonstrate an understanding of economic events – both past and present – in relation to financial markets. In addition, learners will gain an understanding of financial technical and fundamental analysis at a foundational level. They will also compare and contrast a variance of analytical chart types, in order to understand the impact of global economic data.

2. Financial asset classes, underlying markets and back-office functions

Within this module, students will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the different types of financial asset classes and financial products, as well as associated underlying markets. They will also learn about global financial market exchanges operations and the functions of clearinghouses. In conjunction with this, learners will develop an understanding of back-office procedures, processes and risk mitigation.

3. Foundation financial trading strategies

Learners will cultivate the knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to recognise trading opportunities and execute basic trading strategies. This will involve keeping daily logs of market behaviour and analysis. They will also develop an understanding of the associated risks with speculative trades, while understanding the principles of risk mitigation via account management or through the use of hedging techniques. This module also asks that students produce a development plan of progression towards a higher level of understanding.

Who is the Level 3 Diploma in Financial Trading for?

The Level 3 Diploma in Financial Trading is a financial trading qualification aimed at 16+ learners, who wish to obtain financial services jobs in a variety of supporting roles within the industry.

Some examples such as back-office functions, trade support, and investment administration.

Learners will gain both foundational knowledge of trading and supporting roles, to support front office or may use the diploma as a springboard from which to progress onto the Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Financial Trading.

Can I become a trader after studying this course?

While the Level 3 delivers a foundational level of trading theory on financial markets that is recognised by employers, it is recommended that all candidates progress to and acquire the Level 5 Advanced Diploma.

It is here that graduates will attain greater professional competency and valuable financial trading tools that will ensure stand out at interview – and success as a trader thereafter.

What will the qualification allow me to pursue a career in?

The primary purpose of the Level 3 Diploma is to prepare learners for employment in a range of supporting roles within the finance sector, for example:

• investment administration
• trainee risk manager

Jon holds a wealth of trading experience dating back to the mid-1980s, starting out at BNP and JP Morgan before becoming an independent trader on London’s LIFFE exchange. After the closure of ‘the pits’, Jon made a successful transition to electronic trading where he adapted his style to suit the new format of trading. Most of his career has been spent trading Government Bond Futures and Equity Indices, while in recent years his speciality has shifted over into STIR products. For the last decade, Jon has become more and more involved with trader education, writing courses, webinars and presentations. He particularly enjoys educating new traders and helping them navigate the path from novice to self- sustained trader.
