Course Overview​

This course is designed to provide a deep exploration into the complexities of managing operational risks within organisations, focusing on the impact these risks have on business operations and the importance of regulatory compliance. ​

The course covers a range of key issues including the selection and implementation of risk control strategies, the role of organisational structure in risk management, and the significance of internal audit systems and IT monitoring. ​

The programme emphasises understanding and mitigating cyber risks, leveraging robust and secure software systems, and identifying symptoms of poor risk culture within an organisation. ​

Participants will learn about measuring and modeling operational risks, conducting root cause analysis, generating scenarios for stress testing, and addressing financial crimes and anti-money laundering efforts. Additionally, the course will explore the challenges and vulnerabilities presented by cyber risks in business processes and the best practices for enhancing risk culture across all organisational levels. ​


Learning Objectives


Understand and identify the various forms of operational risk and their impact on organisational performance, including the regulatory focus on misconduct and the effective selection and implementation of risk control strategies.​


Analyse and implement robust organisational structures that support operational risk management, including well-resourced internal audit systems, proper IT monitoring, and effective back-office functions, while ensuring systems of accountability and appropriate disciplinary guidelines are in place.​


Evaluate and mitigate cyber risks by understanding the architecture of enterprise software, identifying internal and external vulnerabilities, and adopting best practices for secure systems integration, outsourcing, and the use of emerging technologies like blockchain and AI.​


Recognise symptoms of poor risk culture within organisations, including the influence of executive leadership and governance on risk practices, and develop strategies to foster a strong risk management culture with a focus on ethical principles and diverse perspectives.​


Master the techniques for measuring and modeling operational risks, including loss modeling methods, scenario-based analysis, stress testing methodologies, and understanding the limitations of data in quantifying risks.​


Address financial crimes and enhance anti-money laundering (AML) efforts by understanding the legal, regulatory, and supervisory frameworks, implementing effective transaction monitoring and reporting frameworks, and ensuring senior management responsibility in AML/CTF initiatives.
