When Performance Meets Performance

The demands of elite sport and professional trading have more in common than most people realise.

California, USA | 15 July 2026 – Last week, the similarities between elite sport and professional trading were put to the test in a bespoke trading simulation programme for collegiate student athletes, exploring how the behaviours developed through elite sport transfer into the fast-moving world of financial markets.

The programme immersed participants in financial markets by placing them in an environment that rewarded the qualities they had already developed through elite sport: preparation, resilience, accountability, adaptability and the ability to make disciplined decisions under pressure. It provided a different arena in which those strengths could be tested, challenged and developed.

Those qualities were developed through immersive practice using the same execution interface employed across institutional markets and real-time exchange market price data, they interpreted evolving market conditions, executed trades, managed risk and reviewed both their decisions and their outcomes alongside an experienced practitioner. Each session moved through market briefings, execution and structured debrief, placing equal emphasis on judgement, discipline and reflection. Designed to mirror the pace and pressures of a professional trading desk.

Leading the programme was Tim Foster, whose career combines a decade as an electronic proprietary futures trader and seven years in professional rugby. Having experienced both elite sport and professional trading first-hand, Tim brings a perspective that resonates naturally with athletes while grounding every session in the realities of financial markets.

Comments from participants revealed consistent themes from the programme: the realism of the simulation, the opportunity to develop judgement through experience and Tim’s engaging coaching style.

One participant described the programme as a “10 out of 10 experience”, adding that they would “100% recommend this to somebody who is interested in trading.” Another reflected on the value of learning through experimentation:

It was a great way to jump into trading. I had never done it before and knew very little, so at first it felt intimidating. Once I got in there and failed, I think I learned more than I would have if I’d tried too hard to understand it beforehand.

On the realism of the experience, one participant commented:

Great course to understand the fast-paced environment that is trading. Tim did a great job guiding us while letting us make the mistakes to learn. The simulation is extremely helpful and feels real.

The parallels extend well beyond this latest cohort. Reflecting on his own experience of a previous ZISHI programme, former England and Harlequins rugby player Jack Clifford observed:

The similarity between trading and professional sport is striking: diligence, discipline, resilience and the ability to remove emotion from decision-making.

Across more than 200 athletes who have participated in ZISHI financial markets programmes, that observation has been reinforced time and time again.

For organisations investing in performance, talent development and career transition, experiences such as this provide more than an introduction to financial markets. They demonstrate how the behaviours developed through elite competition, can be applied in a different performance environment.

Real-time simulation is what makes that possible. It enables participants to apply existing performance behaviours in live market conditions, make decisions with consequences, receive immediate feedback and develop judgement through experience rather than observation.

Whether preparing future traders, supporting athlete career transition or developing high-performing teams, the principle is the same: meaningful capability is built through experience.
