Sheffield | 2 September 2026 – Sixteen students successfully complete ZISHI’s Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Financial Trading summer programme at Sheffield Business School, with outstanding student feedback: 4.91 out of five for the overall experience, five out of five for programme content and exceptional ratings for ZISHI’s practitioner tutors.
Strong results in their own right. The real measure of the programme, however, is what changed for the students taking part.
While many of their peers were beginning their summer break, this group of Sheffield Hallam University students entered five demanding weeks in a professional trading environment.
They worked with real-time market data and professional trading technology. They studied bonds, foreign exchange, commodities, options, short-term interest rates and indices. They planned trades, managed risk, kept daily trading diaries and learnt what happens when decisions have to be made under pressure.
By the end, having been tested technically, professionally and at times personally, the students had achieved a fully accredited, Ofqual-regulated professional qualification, externally recognised by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) at Associate Membership level.
The development behind the headline ratings is striking.
Across the seven Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours measures – financial trading knowledge, resilience, discipline, adaptability, problem solving, time management and confidence in a professional environment – the average rating increased from 2.61/5 before the programme to 4.56/5 afterwards.
Every respondent said the programme had improved their prospects of employment within the financial industry and left with aspirations to work in financial trading or a related role.
The graphic shows where that development happened. Every measure improved, with some of the largest shifts seen in resilience and time management alongside substantial growth in financial trading knowledge and confidence in a professional environment.
The results are testament to the quality of the programme and the practitioners who deliver it. They also reflect the commitment of the students themselves.
Crucially, every student place was fully sponsor-subsidised.
Support from Sheffield Hallam University, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), Aralyx and ZISHI removed the financial barrier to taking part, giving students access to practitioner-led training and the opportunity to achieve a regulated professional qualification at no cost to participants.
The principle behind the programme is simple: talent is widely distributed. Access to opportunity is not.
What sits behind the results
Removing the financial barrier is only the beginning. Once students arrive, expectations are deliberately high.
The programme immerses students in an environment much closer to professional practice than conventional classroom learning. There are early starts and intensive days. Students use real-time market data and professional trading systems and are expected to prepare, make decisions, justify them, manage risk and review their performance.
That combination of technical learning and professional expectation is deliberate. Preparing thoroughly, managing time, adapting to changing circumstances, making considered decisions under pressure and taking responsibility for performance are capabilities students can carry into financial services and their wider careers.

The students describe that development more powerfully than the numbers can.
One arrived with previous trading experience and said they left having “rebuilt almost all of it”.
“Five weeks on a live floor taught me that trading is not about making money quickly, it is about not losing it, and about the discipline required to plan a trade before the session and then hold to that plan under pressure.”
Their reflection captures the wider impact:
“The change in me went beyond markets. I am more disciplined and more deliberate in everything I do.”
Another student described the programme as career changing. One said it had developed their practical knowledge and confidence and made them ready to work in a professional environment “without fear”, whilst the professional culture of the trading room stood out as a particular strength for one female student:
“The trading room is a safe and supportive environment for women. It is professional, structured and encouraging, and it is nothing like the stereotypes shown online. I felt supported every step of the way.”
Weekly mentoring sessions are also central to that progression. Every student who responded said the individual feedback was beneficial, giving them the chance to examine their performance, behaviour and decision-making throughout the qualification.
One student explained that those conversations helped them recognise that trading involves far more than getting technical analysis right: behaviour, discipline and risk management matter just as much.
For Robert Russell, ZISHI’s Global Head of Professional Trader Qualifications, that development is one of the clearest measures of the programme’s value:
“You can see the change happening over the five weeks. Students become more structured in their preparation, more disciplined in the decisions they make and much more conscious of risk and their own behaviour. Their market knowledge develops significantly, but so does their confidence in operating in a professional environment.
“That is particularly important on a widening participation programme. A student’s ability to access this kind of experience should not be determined by whether they can afford it. Fully sponsor-subsidised places give them the chance to test themselves against genuine professional expectations and leave with greater confidence, demonstrable professional skills and a regulated qualification behind them.”
Connecting education with opportunity
The programme is designed to give students more than an academic understanding of financial markets. Connections with industry help make the professional world they are considering more tangible.
This summer, Neil Scurlock, Head of ICE Education, visited the cohort at Sheffield Business School, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with one of the organisations helping to make their places possible.
That engagement matters. As one participant wrote in this year’s feedback:
“Very few people get access to a genuine trading floor environment at this stage of their career. I am grateful for the opportunity and for the standard of teaching throughout.”
For students who want to take their development further, there is also a route beyond the programme.
Through ZISHI’s partnership with Aralyx, successful students on ZISHI-linked university programmes are offered a route into a structured, merit-based professional trading assessment pathway.
Each year, Aralyx can select up to six students from across ZISHI university programmes for an internal development track, with assessment costs covered in full. Those who go on to demonstrate the required performance and risk standards can ultimately progress towards the opportunity to trade firm capital.
It creates a meaningful connection between education, verified performance and professional opportunity, with progression earned on merit.
